Don’t Pay Lawyers, Make Dollars

There’s been quite a bit of publicity alately about mash-up and remixes. DJ’s taking existing songs and remixing (or mashing) them together to make something new. The record companies seem to be missing a big opprtunity here. They wail on about how their antiquated business model (that they won’t change) doesn’t make them money. And here’s a potential revenue stream right at their feet just waiting or them to scoop it up.

A record company(ies) could take songs that would oherwise be at the end of their sales shelf life and make them available for remix/mashup creation. Take the r/m put online as a digital product, no physical media necessary. Charge fans an extra premium may 1.29 intead of .99 for example to tkae care of any accounting pecuiarities between companies, offer the r/m creator say 20% in royalties, then the record company and the artist get the rest. Voila.

Dr Robert Moog has died at his North Carolina home aged 71, four months after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

His is instruments were used by The Beatles and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The Switched-On Bach LP made him a household name. Later people like the The Cure, Fatboy Slim and Stereolab kept the sound alive, even as analogue synthesisers were superseded by digital instruments-or that’s what the marketing people want you to think. These groups went thru ebay and the like to get that sound which only a true MiniMoog gives.

The last time I saw Dr. Robert Moog is when Apple and him were awarded the Techincal Grammy in 2002. The Technical Grammy is awarded to people and businesses who, through technical innovations, have enhanced the recording industry.

A public memorial celebration is planned for Friday at the Orange Peel Club in Asheville, North Carolina.
Fans and friends can direct their sympathies or remembrances online.

Dr. Moog’s family has established The Bob Moog Foundation, dedicated to the Advancement of Electronic Music in his memory. Many of his longtime collaborators, ranging from musicians to engineers and educators, have agreed to sit on its executive board, including David Borden, Wendy Carlos, Joel Chadabpe, John Eaton, David Mash, and Rick Wakeman. For more information about the foundation, contact Matthew Moog at mattmoog@yahoo.com.
