Women Online

Tara Hunt of Citizen Agency wrote a good read on her blog about the question I know many women get who need to be visible online - “Aren’t you afraid, as a woman, about being so open online?

As a person who been told in e-mail and to my face that I am working for the devil, I have learned no matter how hard you try and how nice you are, some people just won’t like you. (The one problem with the Devil remark, it has been directed to different companies I have worked for or consulted for. )

I agree with Tara, the precise reason that people bully others is to shut them up. The important point to take home here I think is the openness of the relationships people need to have to do business online. Women need to must be able to as free as men to choose the degree of openness they think is appropriate to compete and work with others. Failure to do so means they will fail to advance and grow.

The Jericho Lesson is more than NUTS!!!!

Jericho Bomb

I think they have to understand that the Nielsens are not telling the story anymore and that the 18-49 demographic they’re all so keen on is online and that’s how increasingly they are getting their news and entertainment.”
-Carol Barbee, producer of Jericho
From the LA Times Show Tracker Blog

Will old institutions learn the hard facts such as people moving from printed books to electronic formats? Plus their ways to measure their supporters are vastly outdated for many demographics because cell phones and the Internet. The ones who do will still be in business in 10 years.

FYI: The Jericho fans have sent bags of nuts to CBS headquarters in protest. Nutsonline even made it easy for you to sent nuts to CBS via their “NUTS for Jericho” page.

Missing Tech TVer

I just received this disturbing news Via Leo Laporte. If any of you knows anything please help…

CNET editor and former Fresh Gear contributor and Lab analyst James Kim has been missing since Saturday. ANY word, especially from people in the Oregon area is appreciated. The information is all below from the official investigation by the SFPD.

Missing Family Includes: James, Kati, Penelope (age 4.5) and Sabine (6 months). Last name is Kim

Overview: The Kim Family left San Francisco on November 17th on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They had Thanksgiving in Seattle with family and then drove to Portland. They were last seen by their friends in Portland whom they had brunch with on Saturday, November 25. According to their friends, their plans were to drive out to the town of Gold Beach on the Oregon Coast and then make their way back to San Francisco. James was expected back at work on Tuesday, November 28th. When no one had heard from him by Wednesday morning employees at the Kims’ two stores and his colleagues at CNET began to make phone calls to his family and friends to inquire of his whereabouts. Presently, the SFPD is investigating the case.

The family was last heard from at around 5:45 PM on Saturday. A hotel clerk at the Tu Tu Tun lodge in Gold Beach, Oregon took a call from James. He said he was about five hours away. The hotel clerk said she would leave the keys out for them as the lobby would be closed after 10. The keys were still in the same place the next morning. The clerk believes James referred to being near Salem, Oregon at the time. They were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of “DOESF”.

More details and pictures of the family are available on CNET’s Crave Blog.

If you know anything about James’ whereabouts, you can contact the SFPD by calling 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and 415-553-1071 after hours.

Washington State Democratic Party are Thieves!

A state Democratic Party flier for congressional candidate Darcy Burner (WA 8th) includes an “unauthorized used” photo. This is a nice way of saying they took it and used it. I am sure they hoped the photographer did not have the resources to deal with it being stolen. Sorry, I am an Eastern Washington boy, so we are very blunt on these matters. The photo, by Michael Yon, is a U.S. solider with a dying Iraqi girl in his arms. You can see the flyer here.

“It’s a copyright infringement, it’s a legal matter,” D.C. attorney John Mason told Seattle Times reporter, David Postman.

As person who has made a living from intellectual property almost their whole adult life, including stock photography, I have zero tolerance for copyright infringement. The photo is this man’s property to use as he sees fit and to sell or not sell as he sees fit. End of story.

If Burner does not condemn the action of the state party and offer payment and an apology to Mr. Michael Yon, then please vote for Congressman Dave Reichert!

After all the 8th CD is the home of Microsoft and we need someone congress who gets it when it comes to intellectual property.

Yes, the flier was produced by the Washington State Democratic Party, not her campaign, but the goal is to help her gain office. Time to show the voters your character Darcy. This was done in your name and for your gain.

Democratic spokesman Kelly Steele said, “Our attorneys have been contacted and are investigating. As Mr. Mason said, it’s a legal matter”, per Postman’s blog.

But it is also a statement on the Democratic state party’s ethics, business practices and views on intellectual property rights. It also will also give an insight into Darcy Burner’s stand on those issues too.

Hats off to both Sound Politics and The Seattle Time’s David Postman for covering this.

Update

It has been pointed out to me that this is the second time copyrighted material has been used without permission for Darcy to gain the seat, the first being the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) using TVW footage without permission. TVW is Washington’s state’s version of C-SPAN and is non-partisan. You can go here to read the Seattle Times Editorial Board story, “Denounce the ad, Darcy Burner.”
